How to become Chorister
Chorister's duties - 2

WHAT IS AN ABBEY CHORISTER EXPECTED TO DO?

Services

All choristers are required to sing at the 10.30am Conventual Mass on Sundays during term time and the first Sunday in each half-term break. In addition to this the boys are required for Christmas Midnight Mass, services in Holy Week (namely Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Day), and other weekday services including Vespers for Advent and Pentecost. The Choristers also perform regularly in concerts, notably “Carols by Candlelight”.

Rehearsals

All choristers are required to attend rehearsals five times a week. Additional rehearsals are scheduled before special services and concerts.

Additional duties

In recent years the choir has undertaken recordings for the BBC and Herald. The choir also receives invitations to perform concerts both in the UK and on the continent and, from time to time, organizes foreign tours. The length of these tours varies (2008 – 5 days) and costs are subsidized within the choir budget.

WHAT BENEFITS CAN CHORISTERS EXPECT TO RECEIVE?

Instrumental and Voice tuition

Besides the great fun the boys enjoy in singing in the Choir and performing in many venues, all choristers benefit from full Instrumental and Singing scholarships during their time in the choir. This provides an invaluable musical education and past choristers have later received choral scholarships at Oxford or Cambridge.

Stipend

All choristers also benefit from a termly stipend of £50.
